Van McElwee

“Supernatural”

Opening on March 1st 2013, 7 p.m.

Waves of variation reveal the contours of impossible form, as if the process of decay were reversed, causing delicate structures to emerge from the grain of chaos. An alchemy occurs when the outer world is transformed into video: it becomes mind-stuff. I carry this process forward, questioning the nature of reality, exploring time and dimensionality by weaving fragments of the world into new patterns. In this way, video can enjoy the same freedom as painting and music; it can be something, not just about something.

Van McElwee distinguished media artist who is greatly respected for his work in experimental video, but his work also expands very successfully into installation, sound, print, interactive work and the internet. He has been awarded The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, The American Film Institute Independent Filmmaker Award, The National Endowment for the Arts Independent Production Fund (seven time recipient), and a travel grant from the Government of India. Van is renowned internationally and in his home country where he is also working as Professor of Electronic and Photographic Media at Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri.
